Mileage guide

How many miles is too many on a used car?

There is no single mileage number that makes every vehicle a bad purchase. Compare mileage with the vehicle’s age, maintenance records, ownership history, warning lights, rust, leaks and the results of an in-person inspection.

✓ About 10,000–15,000 miles per year is a useful comparison point.
✓ A maintained highway-mile vehicle may be better than a neglected low-mile vehicle.
✓ Check timing components, transmission service and fluid condition.
✓ Budget for wear items such as tires, brakes, suspension and the battery.

Buying guide

How to buy a used car with confidence

  1. 1.Set a total budget that includes tax, title, registration, insurance and possible repairs.
  2. 2.Compare the VIN, mileage and title information with the vehicle and paperwork.
  3. 3.Review available history and service records, but still inspect the vehicle in person.
  4. 4.Test the brakes, steering, transmission, warning lights, heat and air conditioning.
  5. 5.Ask what is included in the written price and read every document before signing.
  6. 6.Arrange an independent inspection when you need additional confidence.

Vehicle title guide

Clean, salvage and rebuilt titles explained

Clean title

The title does not carry a current salvage or rebuilt brand. A clean title does not replace a mechanical inspection or history review.

Salvage title

The vehicle was declared a total loss or otherwise branded salvage. Registration and road use normally require the applicable state process first.

Rebuilt title

A previously salvage vehicle completed the required examination and title process. Review repair quality, documentation and insurance options carefully.

Always confirm the exact title brand on the current title and DMV records. Requirements and terminology can vary by state.

Budget guide

Compare the full cost—not only the price

A lower sticker price is not always the lowest-cost choice. Compare insurance, fuel use, expected maintenance, tire cost, financing terms and your planned ownership period. Vehicle price and availability must be confirmed with the dealership; taxes, title, registration and applicable fees may be additional unless stated in writing.
